Have you started your Christmas shopping yet?

I haven’t. I have a hard time buying things and then saving them for Christmas. Especially if I know it’s something one of my kids would love. It’s so hard! I don’t know how you guys do it.

Money usually seems to be extra tight around the holidays. Especially with people being forced on furlough and not sure of when they will be paid. We haven’t dealt with that, but we have experienced a tightening of the budget with extra therapy sessions, no quarter bonuses, and fall/winter clothes to buy.

I love that there are ways I can work from home and make money online while staying home with the kids and also reaching our money goals.

What would you add to the list?

10 Ways to Make Money for Christmas

Here are some ways we are making extra money for Christmas (affiliate links have been included):

1. Yard Sale.

We still have the tables set up in our garage for the yard sale that we haven’t actually had yet. It’s not easy getting up early enough to have a yard sale, but it’s so worth it. Maybe if I could get to bed before 12:30 am it would be easier to rise and shine that early. With yard sales in the past, we usually make several hundred dollars. We have a rule about yard sales. If it doesn’t sell, it goes to Goodwill. We don’t make cash off that rule, but it is a tax write-off. Too cold? Try selling in Facebook BST groups!

2. Craigslist.

You have to be careful with this one. I’ve had nothing but great experiences with Craigslist, but sometimes it does bring out the crazies. Craigslist is great for bigger items that you want to sell but you want more money for it than typical yard sale items. If at all possible, meet the person in a high traffic area away from your home. Then go run errands afterward so they can’t follow you home {not to be paranoid. just to be safe}.

3. Swagbucks.

I LOVE Swagbucks. This is where I get my gift cards for Amazon. There are so many different options at redemption, but I typically get the Amazon gift card with the occasional Paypal gift card. Using Swagbucks is SO simple! You simply install their toolbar or bookmark their site and use it to search for everything when you are online. You’ll be rewarded with Swagbucks at random for your searches. Easy Peasy!

ALSO, I recently used Swagbucks to purchase gift cards to Walmart, that I used to purchase Disney Gift Cards and paid for part of my Walt Disney World vacation. How AWESOME is that?! FOR FREE!! Sign up now.

4. Consignment sales and stores.

I have been a consignor at one consignment sale. I hear it gets easier the more you do it. I prefer the consignment store setup myself. I don’t have to hang or tag. I just load it up and take it in. It’s a great way to make money with minimal effort.

5. Barter for services.

Do you bake, craft, or make your own personal care items? Do you sell bags, make-up, essential oils, and health care items? Can you cut hair, mow lawns, make wreaths, hem pants, or make curtains? Is there something that you would love to buy on Etsy (affiliate link) or another craft site but it’s not in the budget right now? Message them and ask if they would be interested in bartering services. Who knows, maybe they are looking for someone with your talent. And if they say no, try someone else.

6. Make something to sell.

You can sell these items at Fall Festivals, Christmas Shows, or your yard sale. Now is probably the time to think ahead for next year on this one, but that just means you have plenty of time to figure out what you want to sell and perfect it. You could learn a new craft like making soap or lotion. You could also paint ornaments, or sew aprons. The possibilities are endless. Again, try the Facebook BST groups in your area.

7. Buy Online

Instead of taking four children to the store to make essential purchases daily, I buy online. I can keep better track of what we spend and I’m not tempted to toss extra items into my cart impulsively.

Ebates is one of my favorite cash-back tools. I go to their site first, click the link to the store where I need to make a purchase, and each month they send me a check. It’s great! Easy money.

Grove Collaborative has saved us a lot of money on personal care items and household cleaning supplies. They carry great brands at fair prices, plus make deliveries to your home. That’s where we buy toothpaste, toilet bowl cleaner, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent, dish soap, hand soap, sponges, and kitchen towels. They have so many more options. It’s convenient. I save money. It’s wonderful.

8. Make your own household items.

Things like deodorant/toothpaste/laundry detergent can be made at home. Then you can set the money you would have spent aside. I was really surprised at how easy it was to make my own deodorant. And it makes a lot! We had all the items in our pantry so it didn’t cost extra, and I don’t have to worry about putting the crazy ingredients on my body. I bought our toothpaste kit from Bulk Herb Store {love them!}. I’m still working on the laundry detergent.

9. Set aside a specific amount each week and watch it grow.

Yet again, this would be easier to start now for next year, depending on how much you want to set aside. If you set aside $20 for 52 weeks, you’d have $1,040 by the end {if you didn’t spend any during the savings period}. If you added it to a savings account where you were able to gain interest on it, that amount could grow even more!

10. Make handmade gifts.

Remember it’s about the memories and thoughts behind the present, not the price. We try to limit the gift giving by giving each child 3 gifts – something they want, something they need, and something to read.

I hope that no matter where you find yourself financially this holiday season, you remember that it’s not all about the presents and the glitz and glamour. Yes, those things are super fun. But it’s really all about a little baby who was humbly born in a stable because there wasn’t room. Maybe we can make room for those who find themselves away from family this season.
