I’ll be honest. I’ve never really been a snacker. Snacks have always been a foreign concept to me.

Working in childcare for several years before I had children of my own left me wondering how these children could stay hungry all the time. We would serve them breakfast, morning snack, lunch, and an afternoon snack. So much food!

Much of it would go to waste or it wasn’t the best option for a healthy lifestyle, unfortunately.

Now that I have children of my own, I see that they really could eat 24-7. My children ask for food all the time. I have had to put boundaries on snacking at our house.

If they just ate breakfast, lunch, or dinner, they don’t get a snack but they can drink water.

If we are around the halfway mark between meals then they get a small snack.

If I have started fixing dinner, they can drink water and wait until dinner. Especially with this one, they will eat their snack and not their dinner.

The best thing that I ever did in regard to snacks was to have everything accessible to them in the refrigerator and in the pantry. My oldest loves to help with snacks and serve her brothers and sister by preparing snacks for them.

It’s like a tea party—every day.

They help me make the grocery list, and usually at least one of them goes with whoever is shopping, so they are involved in the snack choices. I think that is their favorite part. Below are some of their favorites.

Something that I know not everyone will agree with, but it happens occasionally at our house, is playing with our food.

Our children can be so creative if we just let them be.

For snack the other day I set out Horizon Cinnamon Snack Grahams and Horizon Cheddar Snack Crackers on the table in little mounds. Before I knew it, the kids were making a maze. The maze turned into a treasure map as my children transformed into pirates helping Captain Jake defeat Lord Fathom.

I did nothing but set out the food.

I love when their imaginations take over. When they can be handed anything, and their little minds transform it into something spectacular.

While allowing your children to pick out their snacks doesn’t guarantee they will eat it, it’s at least a start. Maybe pack an extra snack in their bag for them to share with a new friend.

One of the best ways to get to know someone better is over food.

  1. Good for you for not being a snacker. That is a weak point of mine. Ever since having kids, we have made snack time a ‘healthy options only’ time. We use a lot of your same ideas, but cashews and raisins are by far my two year old’s favorite snack. I have never tried frozen peas with him. I will have to give that one a try! Thanks for the suggestion. 🙂
