Horizon Go Green Feature-2

As my children get older, and I slowly inch my way out of survival mode, I have tried to be more intentional about teaching them to be good stewards of what we have been given. This includes not only the things that we have, but always being good stewards of the planet we live on {which some days is earth, but other days it’s Mars.}.

Teaching children how to go green is not as hard as it may seem.

5 Easy Ways to Teach Your Child How to Go Green

First, we started with things we can do around the house.

1. Simple things such as turning off the lights when you leave a room, and shutting off the water while brushing your teeth are easy enough for even littles to start implementing. While I may have to remind them occasionally, for the most part, they remember and love doing their part to save the planet.

2. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. My oldest is a huge help when it comes to this. She is always making sure that I take all of our cardboard boxes to the recycling bin. One of her “jobs” is to see what items we would normally just throw away can be used for art projects, in the garden, or can be helpful somewhere else. There are times that it’s been easier for me to put the item in the trash and she yells, from across the room, “Mommy, wait!! We can reuse or recycle that!”. Yes, I have created the ReUse Police.

3. Use cloth. By using cloth napkins and old washcloths as cleaning rags, you reduce the need for paper towels. This not only saves trees, but it also keeps the chemicals from the paper towels out of your house. Plus cloth napkins just feel better when you need to wipe your hands and face.

4. Plant a garden. Two years ago we built a raised bed to grow a little garden. It was the perfect size for our family. Last year, with a newborn, we didn’t grow vegetables, but we did plant herbs. My kids love having a garden. You don’t even need a raised bed. Container gardening is perfect for little helpers. We have watched tiny seeds grow into huge plants and eaten the fruit of our labor. My kids have a better understanding of where their food comes from. They are so proud of their little plant “babies” that they have nurtured from tiny shoots and seeds. Composting is a great way to help reduce our impact on the environment too.

5. Explore the great outdoors. Get outside. Breathe in the fresh air. Leave your phone at home. Nature hikes around the neighborhood or a local park are perfect for children. Let them collect rocks, leaves, acorns, flowers, whatever they find along the walk. When you get home, make a Nature Collage to showcase all the fun things. Ask each child to draw a picture of what they saw and ask them to tell you all about it. Nature walks are a great way for children to get outside and explore the world around them

Pack Your Snacks

While you are out enjoying nature, don’t forget to bring along snacks. We are pretty health conscience when it comes to what I allow my kids to snack on. But all snacks must be easy to grab and go since we are usually running late. Always? Maybe.

Our on the go snacks usually include:

  • apples
  • grapes
  • bottles of water
  • Horizon Super Squeeze
  • rice cakes

Our snacks have to be gluten free, so our choices are usually slim. Horizon Super Squeeze is a creamy blend of organic milk and real fruit in one convenient snack. The squeeze pouches are quick and easy to grab and go. Every serving contains 5 grams of protein and provides an excellent source of calcium. It’s a win win for moms and littles!
