Don’t let your children become a statistic. Read about these 5 safety skills that every child should be taught today.

As any parent knows, keeping kids safe is a top priority. But it’s not always easy to know what safety skills to teach them. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Teach them how to look both ways before crossing the street.
  • Show them how to stop, drop, and roll if they ever catch on fire.
  • Explain what poison is and how to stay away from it.
  • Help them learn their home address and phone number in case they ever get lost.

Of course, these are just a few ideas. The most important thing is to talk to your kids about safety and help them identify potential dangers in their everyday lives. By teaching them safety skills early on, you can help them stay safe for years to come.

I live in my own little happy world.

Maybe I should say I live in a bubble.

I rarely watch the news. Unless the information shows up on my Facebook Newsfeed, I miss it. In a way, this is good because a lot of news stories are heartbreaking. We live in a cruel broken world. But I don’t want my children to suffer harm because I never thought anything would happen to us.

While I don’t want to expose my children to the ugliness of the world, it is my job as their Mama to keep them safe. Helicopter might be my middle name. I am just kidding. I won’t always be around. My kids need to know what to do in case of an emergency. I need to be proactive in teaching them not only life skills but also safety basics.

5 Safety Skills Every Child Should be Taught

1. How to call 9-1-1.

  • They need to know their name.
  • How old they are.
  • Their address.
  • Their telephone number in case they get disconnected
  • And be able to tell the operator what the emergency is.

I was recently introduced to a FREE app that helps reinforce these new skills and simulates a 9-1-1 call. My kids really think there is a person talking to them. When they open the app and use that feature, I jump a mile high thinking they really did call 9-1-1. You can find DialSafe Pro – Little Bit Studio, LLC. app in the App Store for iPhone. Or the iPad DialSafe Pro – Little Bit Studio, LLC. app.

2. Where they can find a “safe place” if they find themselves in danger.

  • a neighbor’s house {that you know}
  • restaurant
  • store

3. The difference between a bad stranger and a good stranger.

  • adults should NEVER ask children for help, for directions, or to find a lost pet.
  • good adults can be moms with young children, sales clerks, police officers

4. If a stranger is trying to take your child without their consent:

  • they need to scream, “NO! I’M NOT GOING. YOU ARE NOT MY FATHER {MOTHER}.”
  • run to the nearest safe zone
  • tell a safe person what happened

5. No one, not even someone they know, has the right to touch them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable {yucky}.

  • They have a right to say “no.”
  • Emphasize that it’s not their fault so it’s okay to tell.

There are so many safety skills that we need to be teaching our children. These are simply starting points. If you’re scared or unsure what to teach, please find a local child safety organization and register your child today.

  1. These are some great tips! I have made sure from a very young age that my girls knew my cell number and our address. It has come in handy numerous times!

The tip about “You are not my mother” was something our safety officer at my kids’ elementary school taught. I would have never thought to tell my kids that otherwise. It’s not uncommon to hear a child yell “NO” so you tend to tune it out when you are a parent, but if a child was yelling “NO You are not my mother!” you would take a closer look at the situation, for sure.

  2. Great tips. If you ever get the chance to attend a seminar given by the National Missing & Exploited Children folks GO. Best thing I ever did. It will scare the crap out of you and THEN empower you to empower your children to NOT become one of the horrifying statistics they shared.

Especially the part about every stranger isn’t bad. They may need to get help from someone they don’t know at some point! 🙂
