A Little More…

If I were granted a wish of a little more, I may be tempted to wish for a little more coffee. I could always use a little more money. A little more patience on most days would gladly be accepted. But overall, I would love a little more time. Not that my years on earth would be longer, but that the years my children are little would be longer.
These years of littles are hard.
Tiring, but rewarding. I’ve heard easy compared to later seasons of childhood.
I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world.
“The days are long but the years are short” is my motto. And while some days I can not wait until they are old enough to tie their own shoes and wipe their own bottoms, lately, I’m finding I am cherishing those every day moments. Not all the time. I’m not perfect at savoring every moment. I still find myself rushing bedtime at times just so I can breathe. But when my three year old snuggles in beside me in the middle of the night, I let him. Before I know it, he will push me away, and I will be lucky to get a hug.
The baby is already four months old. FOUR months! I have no idea where the time has gone. I savor those baby cuddles. The precious coos and the sweet smiles. I want a little more time of the baby stage. Maybe it’s because she’s a girl and my oldest is a girl so it reminds me just how quickly they grow up. Maybe it’s because I’m no spring chicken, and it’s a real possibility she could be my last.
And even with as crazy as they make me some days, it breaks my heart to think that we could be done. We prayed so hard for just one, and the Lord blessed us with four. I will never take that for granted.
I’m just asking for a little more time as a baby before I blink and she’s heading out into the world on her own.
