Being a mom isn’t easy, but getting dressed every day should be. A schedule filled with after-school activities, doctors’ appointments, and a full day of work – whether inside or outside of the home – can leave you feeling fatigued, with little energy for taking care of the one who takes care of everyone else.

Create a Simple Capsule Wardrobe in 5 Easy Steps

However, a simple, capsule wardrobe can ensure that even the busiest of moms have time to pull together a look that is both classy and trendy. It’s true that parenthood requires a certain amount of flexibility, alongside a heavy dose of durability. Why not, then, have a wardrobe that can do just that?

How to Create a Simple Capsule Wardrobe

Here are five tips for creating a simple capsule wardrobe. Affiliate links have been included. I will receive a commission if you shop through these links.

1. Go Through Your Closet

The first step to making a simple, timeless wardrobe is to evaluate what’s already in your closet. Unless you’re a regular advocate for cleaning out the closet, it’s easy to assume you’ve probably accumulated quite a few articles of clothing (affiliate link). Chances are, you haven’t worn three-quarters of them in the last year.

Now’s the perfect time to pull out what doesn’t fit, what is no longer trendy, and what you just plain won’t wear again. The leftovers should be the pieces that you just can’t bear to part with, pieces that make you genuinely happy when you put them on. They become the foundation for your new wardrobe.

Your capsule wardrobe pieces definitely need to be something you love that also fits your body type.

2. Write Down What’s Needed

After going through the items in your closet, you may find that there are some essentials that need to be replaced. Make a list of any and all items that you think you’ll need. This will ensure that when you cross the threshold of your favorite boutique, you’ll be ready to focus on obtaining just those pieces and nothing – or almost nothing – more.

3. Invest in Essential Pieces

There are some items of clothing (affiliate link) that should be in every mom’s closet. These are the articles of clothing (affiliate link) that don’t go out of style: a white shirt (affiliate link), pencil skirt, and a little black dress, to name a few. Focus your time and money on locating these key articles, as they really can help create the flexibility that you need in your busy schedule.

Try to find fabrics and construction that are going to be durable over time with multiple wears and washes.

Looking for a personal stylist who delivers straight to your door? Stitch Fix has your answer. It’s so simple. You fill out a questionnaire, your personal stylist takes your answers, reads your bio, and they send you clothes.

It’s convenient and the clothes are really cute.

Thred-up is also a great place to buy clothes. Think of an online consignment shop. It’s a great way to try new styles without breaking the bank.

4. Stay True to the Less-Is-More Mantra

It’s easy to get swept up in-store sales and coupons, and while those are great, they tend to make you spend more on something you normally would not have purchased. Rather than trying to just accumulate more and more – a difficult thing to go against in our culture – stick to your list first.

If, after purchasing those investment pieces, you see something you can’t live without, add it to the closet. A suggestion for determining what you can’t live without. Walk away from the item for a few days. If you still can’t take your mind off it, go get it. If you forget, well, you’ve just saved yourself some money.

5. Learn How to Mix up Your Wardrobe

Having the clothes is all great but knowing how to style them can make the difference between a good wardrobe and a great one.

Spend some time getting acquainted with your closet. Trying on outfits and swapping out pieces change up the look. Consider taking pictures of each outfit so that when the rush of the morning comes, you know exactly what to put on.

Taking care of everyone else is one of the joys – and hardships – of being a mom. However, taking care of yourself is what allows you to do well caring for others. It’s important to take the time to invest in yourself.

Build your wardrobe as resources allow.

Then focus on creating a look that is comfortable for you and helps you feel put together.
