While I don’t necessarily care for the heat of Summer, I love the spontaneity of Summer. Hopping in the van and deciding to head to the beach, isn’t a far cry from reality in our house. It helps that we live about 3 hours away. Deciding one night that we should take the kids to the Zoo is always on my list. This is when my Type A tendencies fly out the window. I try to say “Yes” more and be the fun mom {within reason}.

But if you look a little closer, you will see that although the trip seems spontaneous, and for the most part it is, this mama is prepared with her Perfect Summer Adventure Kit. It’s magical, kind of like the carpet bag Mary Poppins carries. You will always be prepared. It gives the illusion of spontaneity while still being prepared. It’s awesome.

So how do you create this bag of awesomeness? I am so glad you asked!!

Creating the Perfect Summer Adventure Kit

1. Make a Summer Bucket List or an End of Summer List.

Figure out what supplies might go with each activity. Our activities include the zoo, neighborhood pool, beach, visiting SEALife, local parks, and the ice (affiliate link) cream shop.

2. Make the bags.

A lot of the contents repeat themselves so it’s not as overwhelming as it sounds. Sunscreen, cash, hand sanitizer, diapers and wipes, and a change of clothes are always on the list.

For the Zoo, I keep sunscreen, hand sanitizer, our Zoo pass, and some cash to feed the animals {usually $20} in a gallon-sized plastic bag.

Summer Fun at SEALife

For a pool and splash pad, I have sunscreen, beach towels, bathing suits, our swimming passes, and cash in our swim/pool bag. It’s all ready to go if we decide to take a dip in the pool.

There is a bag in the van that stays in the van. It contains a change of clothes for each child {changed out when the season changes}, extra diapers and wipes, and smallish blankets {also seasonal}. I have heard of people keeping a pair of shoes in the car for each child, but we don’t do that.

We do keep a pair of pajamas for each child in the van for those late nights when we know they will be asleep before we make it home or to our destination.

3. Bring the First Aid Kit.

Ours is pretty basic with (affiliate links) bandages, essential oils, activated charcoal, first aid clay, and more bandages. But it’s important to have on hand. Sometimes a scrape on the knee can turn a day sour, but a “special” bandage makes it all better. Especially if they are character bandages that your child adores.

Messy Play Snack Time

4. Don’t forget the snacks!

Horizon® Cheddar Sandwich Crackers, Horizon® Chocolate and Honey Snack Grahams, Horizon® Mixed Berry Super Squeeze, and fresh fruit such as apples, bananas, and grapes all make excellent snack options for every adventure. Remember to up your water intake too. That is essential to staying hydrated and headache free.

5. Bring along some books.

We love books. Reading with our children is key to fostering imagination in their lives. Reading allows them to explore places they may never see with their eyes. Books have been known to bridge gaps between siblings. Books help pass the time while we wait in restaurants, in line, they can keep car rides more enjoyable for everyone. Each child has their own backpack which houses 3 books, 1 toy, their snacks, and a sippy cup filled with water. This helps my sanity.
