When I started training for half-marathons, it was just something fun to do. Something I could do for me. As a mom of four, I realized one day that I had lost myself somewhere amidst the dirty diapers, and the chicken nuggets in the oven. I would look in the mirror and didn’t recognize the person looking back at me.
I knew something had to change, but I didn’t know what.
So I started running half-marathons. It was something I could do for myself and with friends. Some of those friends I actually met while on a course. It was, dare I say, fun. I enjoyed pushing myself beyond what I thought I could do. I went into my first half-marathon, scared that I wouldn’t finish. Talking about my fears to my oldest daughter, I asked her if she would still love me if I didn’t finish the race.
Her exact words were, “We’ll be disappointed, but we’ll still love you.”
Talk about motivation. I’m glad to report that I did finish that race, and I went on to complete two more half-marathons.
Running isn’t a sport for individuals. My whole family sacrificed time and energy to help me achieve my goals. Strangers on the course helped motivate me to finish when my body wanted to quit.
During one race, I told someone my legs were cramping and they put out a call for salt or mustard packets. While no one near us had any, someone else heard the call and handed me a packet. A packet of salt has never tasted so good. Races bring out the family in us all.

The Donor Dash is a 5K run/walk to honor the lives of organ, eye, and tissue donors, celebrate the lives of organ, eye, and tissue recipients and recognize those who continue to wait for a lifesaving transplant. The 19th Annual Donor Dash will take place on Sunday, July 15th at 8 am in Washington Park in Denver, CO.

If you are wanting to run as a team, team registration closes on 7/8/18. If you’re running as an individual, you have until 7/13. There will be on-site registration available on the day of the event. On-site registration opens Sunday, July 15 at 7 a.m. at the registration tents located near Franklin and Mississippi Streets.
