Creative play is something I knew I wanted in instill in my children.

That decision was easy. How to instill creative play was harder.

First we decided to limit the number of toys that had screens and made noise. Then we started buying toys that were more open-ended. Blocks, dress-up clothes, and wooden peg figures, all became staples in our playroom.

As the kids have gotten older, they have requested toys that are more popular and mainstream.

Happy Place Shopkins

Happy Places Shopkins combines the joy of collecting with the fun of designing with cute little decorations to create a space that your child dreams up on their own. Each Happy Places set features mini-versions of your favorite Lil’ Shoppies who live in the Happy Home where tiny Shopkins characters decorate the space and every single piece of furniture has a cute Petkins face.

They really are adorable.

Each collector pack comes with extra tiles kids can use to extend the Happy Home, and to create add-on rooms for even more decorating fun! Since we don’t have the Happy Home, my kids put the extra tiles together to create their own rooms.

5 Ways Shopkins Promote Creative Play

1. Imagination.

My kids begged to open the boxes and promptly started playing. But they didn’t play house. They were pretending the Shopkins and Lil’ Shoppies were in outer space and were about to be attacked by aliens. Thankfully, the Lil’ Shoppies were able to make friends with the aliens by offering them cookies. Whew. Crisis averted.

2. Free Play.

While the focus of Shopkins Happy Places, is decorating a home to make it happy, kids can use their imaginations when they play. The Lil’ Shoppies could be astronauts that land on an unknown planet filled with Shopkins. Maybe the Shopkins have their own town called Shopkins-ville and the kids figure out who is in charge of the town and give each Shopkin a job. The possibilities are endless.

As we were opening the sets, when it came time to open the collector packs, my kids had to open them like they were on the YouTube videos.

It was pretty funny, but creative.

And then the reveal.

3. Cooperation.

This was one I didn’t expect. I knew that there were enough for everyone to play with, but I didn’t realize that these little guys would help teach my kids how to share, wait their turn to play with a certain Shopkin, and willingly sacrifice playing with the beloved Shopkins when their sibling also wanted to play with that specific Shopkin and Lil’ Shoppie. It was so sweet to watch and listen as they worked out the situations on their own.

4. It’s not a screen.

My favorite part about the Happy Places Shopkins is that there is not a screen involved. In a society where screens are a way of life, it’s nice to be able to not bombard my kids with that. They already love “little things” so any chance to play with miniature figures is a win in their book.

5. Fun.

Hours. My kids have played with Lil’ Shoppies and the collector packs for hours at a time. It’s been fun to watch their imaginations soar as they play together and create different stories each time.
