I can’t tell you exactly when it started happening.

Maybe around the time we brought our fourth baby home from the hospital.

I remember sitting down to read a story with the kids or nurse the baby and I would look around for the pup who previously was always under my feet. But she was no where to be found.

Chalking it up to the transition of another baby in the house, I didn’t think much more about it. But then it started to getting to the point where we hardly ever saw the pup anymore. Unless it was time for food or she had to go potty.

She wouldn’t be sleeping on the bed or on the floor on her bed. She would be sleeping in our closet. Away from all the hustle and bustle downstairs and the crazy that would normally happen in the bedrooms.

Some days she would venture downstairs and stay with us, playing for a bit. But most days she stayed upstairs coming down only to eat and potty.

The guilt started setting in.

She was my first baby.

What could I be doing more of? She hates us. Should we find her a new home? What have we done bringing in four children after her? Did she need a playmate? Should we send her to doggie daycare for some social interaction? Is there a local dog park we should frequent?

All the questions.

Then it hit me.

She was old.

Dogs are considered senior by the time they reach age seven. SEVEN! That’s how old my baby pup turned in January.

According to experts at Purina Pro Plan, around age seven, the glucose metabolism in a dog’s brain begins to change. This change can affect memory, learning, awareness or decision making. We saw this playing out before our very eyes!

That’s why we started her on Purina Pro Plan BRIGHT MIND dog food. Through nutrition and enhanced botanical oils, Purina Pro Plan discovered a way to promote alertness, mental sharpness, and trainability in dogs 7+ with visible results within 30 days.

It was all starting to make sense. Sure she was experiencing the stress of four littles in the house. Who wouldn’t?! They are four little tornadoes who leave wreckage and food debris {her FAVORITE} everywhere they go. But it wasn’t that she hated us. It was simply part of her getting older.

In the 30 days after we started feeding our pup Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind as a daily diet we noticed a difference in our interactions. She wanted to be around us again. She was interested in play and wanted to go for walks. She also hid in the closet less which made me think her ability to adapt and cope with change got better after eating Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind for 30 days.

5 Ways to Teach Your Old Dog Old Tricks

1. Don’t try to teach them new tricks.

There was a time for that. For the most part, that time has passed. Your seven-year-old dog is never going to learn to walk a tightrope while holding their Kong in their mouth. It’s not going to happen.

2. Take them with you.

If you’re going for a walk, grab their collar and leash so they can come along. You will both enjoy the fresh air and exercise.

3. Go outside and play catch together.

Just like in the old days. It is crazy how busy we get these days. Unless we are intentional about doing something, we rarely do it. Make time to play with your dog. Throw a frisbee, tennis ball, or another favorite toy. Play keep away. Do something fun to bring out that pup again.

4. Buy their favorite treat.

Maybe it’s peanut butter in their KONG, rawhide, or dehydrated chicken strips. Whatever their favorite treat is, make it a point to buy some the next time you are buying dog food.

5. Start the 30 day Purina Pro Plan BRIGHT MIND dog food challenge.

You might be surprised at the difference it makes.
