Reading.

We have struggled with reading the past two years in our homeschooling journey. After trying multiple programs without success, I was excited to try Reading Kingdom with my six and four year olds for one year. The Reading Kingdom Online program has been a HUGE success so far!

The Reading Kingdom is a fun, easy-to-use online program that teaches children 4-10 years old how to read and write to a third grade level. While most children start using the program at age 5, it is possible for four year olds to be successful.

Program Features:

  • Use with Windows, Mac, iPad, Android, Chromebooks, etc.
  • Can be used as stand-alone reading curriculum or as a supplement
  • Very game-based and interactive
  • Adapts to the child as they go for personalized instruction
  • Great for initial teaching or for struggling readers
  • Increases comprehension and speed
  • Monthly and yearly subscriptions available
  • Parental helps such as reports, ability to change child levels, adjust settings, etc.

I wasn’t sure how my son was going to respond with his diagnosis of Apraxia and Sensory Processing issues, but with a little tweak to the response time, he LOVES the program.

While there is an Autism Spectrum Disorder Reading online program from Reading Kingdom, we did not review it since he is not on the spectrum, but it is available if that would benefit your child.

Reading Kingdom teaches six key skills: Phonics (Sounds), Sequencing, Writing, Meaning, Grammar, and Comprehension. I’ve also noticed that the program is familiarizing my children with the keyboard, both physical and touchscreen. This is definitely a skill they will utilize in the future.

Parental involvement is discouraged. Honestly, this was a breath of fresh air for me. As a homeschooling mom with other littles, we all needed this program. My daughter needed someone other than me helping her with reading at this point. While I had to set up the computer and log into the program for her, she was able to take ownership of the program. It’s been a great introduction to independent learning. She has thrived with the Reading Kingdom online program. They both have.

My favorite part?

As children move through the reading software program, the path they take is customized to their particular reading needs based on their previous interactions. I love that it’s not a one size fits all approach to reading.

It is suggested that you use the program four times a week for the most success. Don’t worry about trying to remember that though. Not only does the program remind you, so will your children.

Reading Kingdom has been our favorite reading program. It is teaching them skills to learn how to read at their own pace. I’m not trying to figure that out. You can use it on the computer or tablet which makes it convenient to continue learning while away from home. We have been using it as our reading curriculum, supplementing with read alouds, and level one readers.

I highly recommend the Reading Kingdom to anyone who is homeschooling multiple ages, has littles at home, or needs a work at your own pace supplement to help their struggling reader.
